Can a side-opening window be converted to tilt and turn?
One sash, two ways to open
In turn mode, the sash swings into the room from the side. In tilt mode, its top edge leans inward while the bottom stays supported. You get two opening options on the same sash, rather than a second window leaf.
What does ‘opening at the top’ mean?
For tilt and turn, the top edge moves inward. That is different from a top-hung awning window, where the bottom swings outward. When you ask for a conversion, describe the movement you want, not just the name.
Can your existing window be converted?
That depends on the profile and hardware groove, the sash dimensions and weight, the condition of the frame and joints, and the space around the window. Some windows may accept a compatible hardware set; others may need sash alterations or a different solution. A front-facing photo is not enough for a firm decision.
Why a new handle is not enough
The handle operates the mechanism; it does not create the second opening mode on its own. Hinges, a tilt stay, drive components and locking points must work together as a compatible set. Parts and installation requirements vary by system.
Fresh air or an unwanted draught?
Tilting the sash creates an intentional opening for ventilation and takes up less room than a fully swung-open sash. Airflow depends on the opening and outdoor conditions. If air gets through when the window is closed, check alignment, seals, locking engagement and installation. A conversion alone does not guarantee a draught-free window.
What to send before asking for a quote
Send photos with the window open and closed, close-ups of the hinges and sash edge, approximate opening dimensions and any available profile information. Final approval may still require measurements or a site visit. The cost depends on the compatible hardware and any work needed on the existing window.

Common questions
Can every side-opening window be converted?
No. A suitable profile and compatible hardware are essential; each window needs its own assessment.
Does double glazing mean tilt and turn?
No. Double glazing describes the glass unit. Tilt and turn describes how the sash opens.
Will the glass have to be replaced?
Not necessarily. That depends on the sash construction and any alterations required.
Is a tilted window fully closed?
No. Tilt is an open ventilation position. Close the window fully using the instructions for its hardware.
